Construction had gains of 11 thousand jobs throughout building construction, heavy and civil engineering construction and specialty trade contractors. Logging and mining were up 5 thousand, the range of increase for the last few months.
Government jobs were down 8 thousand, mostly because of a decrease of 12 thousand jobs in the Federal Government that was a bigger loss than gain in state and local government. Public school education was down slightly but private education was up enough to net a 5 thousand increase of public and private education employment.
Leisure and hospitality had the biggest job gains among services for October with 53 thousand new jobs. Restaurants were up 29.3 thousand jobs after last months losses, but arts, entertainment and recreation and accommodation made larger than usual job gains, especially accommodations up 7.9 thousand jobs.

Some of the retail sub sectors like food and beverage had a big job gain of 11.5 thousand jobs, along with sporting goods, hobby, book, and music stores with 8.4 thousand new jobs, but clothing stores were down a seasonally adjusted 12.5 thousand jobs.

Financial activities added a net of 7 thousand jobs where the insurance and real estate had gains enough to offset losses in the banking and credit sectors. Personal and laundry services added 5.3 thousand more jobs. Non profit organizations added 1.9 thousand jobs after last months decline.
The October gain of 204 thousand jobs brings encouraging signs. Both manufacturing and construction did better in the same month and all private sectors of the economy had more jobs, an unusual occurrence. This month's increase represents and annual growth rate of 1.80 percent, enough to keep up with population growth and add a few more jobs.
